Metal Monday - Rise of Baphomet (1991)

Baphomet - Rise of Baphomet (1991)

I'm not too crazy about this band overall - however, I think this instrumental track of Germany's Baphomet is fantastic.

Palm-muted, E-strings, power chords, sweet solo-ing and harmonics that sound like some sort of proto-Necrophagist? Count me in.

About Metal Monday

Luis discovered metal sometime while in Catholic middle school - born of part rebellion and some incurable urge to hear as many palm muted low e-strings as possible - metal became an obsession of his as a teenager.

Metal Monday's is our chance every week to headbang with all of you (if that's your thing).

Metal Monday - Veil of Maya (1993)

Cynic - Veil of Maya (1993)

Florida produced an incredible amount of metal bands in the late 80s and early 90s. Among these bands was Cynic, certainly not a conventional band for that time period. Officially classified as Death Metal, their music doesn't have a ton in common with contemporaries of that time, e.g. Obituary, Deicide, Morbid Angel.

This is from Cynic's debut album, Focus.

Metal Monday - Metal Hell (1987)

E-X-E - Metal Hell (1987)

Released in 1987, Stricken By Might by New York City's E-X-E is usually classified as thrash. I think it's a little more post-Maiden, than Kreator or Dark Angel.

Metal Hell is the highlight of the album. It's main riff is a classic metal gallop with some sweet soloing: count me in!

Metal Monday - Disintegrator Incinerator (1986)

Slaughter - Disintegrator Incinerator

I've always thought of Canada's Slaughter as a bridge between Celtic Frost and late 80s / early 90s Florida Death metal. (And clearly, this is a different band than the one that brought us, Up All Night!) Slaughter also briefly featured Chuck Schuldiner of Death.

Strappado, the album this track is from, was released in 1986: the same year Metallica released Master of Puppets and Megadeth put out Peace Sells. While those albums are great in their own right, Strappado was clearly forking the same relative genre, 80s thrash, in very new and distinct route.

MAKE WAY FOR THE INCINERATOR!

p.s. While we don't have any events going on right now, come check out the space. It's still very much a work in progress, but it's going well!

Metal Monday - Edge of the Razor (1988)

Razor - Edge of the Razor (1988)

Canadian Thrash! Razor's first albums started off as more Motorhead than thrash. Over the course of their career, their sound evolved. The sound your hear in this track is pretty unique. It's definitely not Bay Area thrash, not nearly as aggressive as stuff coming out of Germany, not a Slayer clone: but you can hear elements of all plus more in here.

Recommended albums from Razor:

  • Violent Restitution (1988)
  • Open Hostility (1991)
  • Shotgun Justice (1990)
  • Executioner's Song (1985)
