D&D Encounters : Scourge of the Sword Coast

THE SUNDERING, part 3

Fiendish Plots and Foul Creatures Ahead!
Ghosts of Dragonspear Castle chronicled the efforts of the Red Wizards to unlock the power of elemental nodes located in an abandoned temple dedicated to the Princes of Elemental Evil. A gate to the Nine Hells lay open for some time, spewing devils and smoke. The heroes who closed the gate could not know it then, but amid the chaos of battle, another threat emerged.

Now, savage humanoids are raiding the countryside around Daggerford, causing victims of their attacks to seek out the shelter of the town. Stressed from the weight of the refugees, it’s up to a brave group of adventurers to end the raids and free Daggerford from its plight.

D&D Encounters : Legacy of the Crystal Shard

THE SUNDERING, part 2

Evil Stirs in Icewind Dale
The people of Icewind Dale have long stood against the perils of the North. For most of these folk, the events that shook the region a hundred years ago are now distant memories. But what was defeated was not destroyed, and the sinister influence of the Crystal Shard, Crenshinibon, has now wormed its way into the very land of Icewind Dale. As evil forces converge on Ten Towns, the people of the North face their greatest trial yet. Fortunately, they won’t have to face it alone.

D&D Encounters : Murder in Baldur's Gate

THE SUNDERING, part 1

Blood in the Streets!
Wealth flows into the city of Baldur’s Gate like water. As the rich luxuriate in their mansions atop the bluff and artisans ply their trades on the steep streets, masses of poor laborers swell the slums. Money and power beget political scandal, religious fervor, crime . . . and murder. No one feels safe on the rain-darkened streets. Strange, foreign gods are beseeched in secret shrines. The city is rife with corruption. And through it all, the body count keeps rising.

The adventurers have fought off orcs, mercenaries, evil mushroom spores, and vile spider-people. Now, they’re mere feet away from Phoedele and her band of mercenaries who stole the diamond staff. D&D Encounters : Search for the Diamond Staff - Session 6 RECAP

by Giaco Furino

Ruins of Uvaeren
The adventurers have been hot on the trail of mercenaries who stole a powerful artifact. Those mercenaries, the Zhentarim, stole the fabled Diamond Staff and took it to the Vault of Song (famous ruins). By unearthing clues, the adventurers were able to track down the Zhentarim in the ruins of Uvaeren (in the forest) and traveled to the entrance. Thick spiderwebs coated the forest around the opening of the ruins, and the Zhentarim’s horses looked spooked as the heroes ventured forth.

D&D Encounters : Search for the Diamond Staff - Session 5 RECAP

by Giaco Furino

Rogue Agents
Last week the adventurers continued on the trail for the missing Diamond Staff. After meeting and dealing with the Sembian Mage Barcero, the group learned that he was the original person who wanted the Diamond Staff. Barcero hired the Zhentarim, a group of mercenaries, to locate the staff and return it to him. But still he waited for Phoedele. Whether taken by force or coaxed out of him, Barcero gave the group a new destination to seek the Staff. So it was off to Peldan’s Helm to talk to the locals and search the area.

D&D Encounters : Search for the Diamond Staff - Session 4 RECAP

by Giaco Furino

The Ghost Hold
This session marked the start of Chapter Two of this season of D&D Encounters. The adventurers are hot on the trail of the missing Diamond Staff. They’ve followed instructions and directions through the lightly populated Battledale to one of the famous Ghost Holds. These old mansions and manors, now crumbling and burnt down, seem like the perfect innocuous place for a meeting between two secretive parties.

D&D Encounters : Search for the Diamond Staff - Session 3 RECAP

by Giaco Furino

The Fangfist Lair
You’ve followed the trail of those nasty Orcs that stole the Diamond Staff. After working your way through the misty forests north of Hap, you tracked them to a temporary lair. A deep, dark cave, with gnarled roots twisting from the entrance, served as the Orcs’ stopping point.

The drip, drip, drip of errant water in the cave mixed with the darkness and humidity to create an uncomfortable and eerie atmosphere. As the adventurers explored deeper into the cavern they spotted three horses tied up near the entrance. What was going on here? Who was hiding here? Tying up horses didn’t seem like something an Orc would do, so it was time to explore deeper into the caves.

D&D Encounters : Search for the Diamond Staff - Session 2 RECAP

by Giaco Furnino

Imani’s Tower
The crash and clangs of steel rang out even after the chaos subsided. The Orcs that tried to burn down the small town of Hap splintered their attacks, and it seems the sacking of the town was a ruse! The chaotic sounds of battle continued off near the wizard Imani’s tower, and our stalwart heroes followed.

And oh, the decimation that was that old wizard’s tower! The adventurers stumbled upon a ghastly scene. The wizard was unconscious on the floor covered by a dead orc. Burnt and crushed orcs lay scattered around the room and a giant golem, made from cobbled together body parts, screamed and smashed all around.

D&D Encounters : Search for the Diamond Staff - Session 1 RECAP

by Giaco Furnino

Dark Dealings in Hap
What type of famous old wizard would live in a backwater, log cabin town like Hap? You may have asked yourself that question as you trudged through the mud and muck in the mid-day rain. You’d been summoned by the wizard Imani for a month-long job that paid well (and paid in treasure).

The old Turmishan wizard gave you and your group the old “once over” and, though not thrilled with what he saw, went into the details of your quest. He recently came into possession of a powerful ancient Elvish artifact: The Diamond Staff of Chomylla. This staff is a powerful artifact said to unlock the Vaults of Song in the Elvish ruins of Uvaeren. There lies ancient lore, knowledge, and magic that the modern world can’t even begin to comprehend.

SESSION 0 RECAP
Cinnaelos’Cor Festival

If there’s one thing the Dalelands aren’t known for it’s throwing a great party. But once every leap year the elves, men, nobles, peasants, farmers, and adventurers all get together to celebrate Shieldmeet. There were small games to be played, prizes to be won, trivia to be stumped by, and interesting characters to meet! Special prizes went out to raffle winners Loris and Neil, who each won a shiny new set of dice, and to Brandon, who won a copy of Ed Greenwood Presents: Elminster’s Forgotten Realms. Congrats to these hearty folk of the Dalelands!

Beyond The Screen : D&D Encounters - Storm Over Neverwinter : Ask Team DM, part 1

1. Do you actually read the adventure and do you care if we die or not. Or what do you do to make sure we know what’s up every week because I missed two weeks and had no idea what was going on.

(Lauren) Every DM is expected to have read the entire module before Session 0. We have a DM meeting at the start of every season where we throughly discuss the entire story and plot.

Death is part of D&D. No Twenty Sided Store DM seeks out to intentionally kill PCs (in fact they actively try not to), but sometimes players swing first and ask questions later. There are consequences in every decision a DM or a player makes, for good or bad. If every fight was a walk in the park, they would be much less interesting.

You weren’t even supposed to make it this far, you know? Chartilifax, that giant green dragon who spit madness and poison at you and your friends, was supposed to take care of you. He was supposed to chew you up and spit you out! But you sent him howling into the storm-soaked night, and you made it to the second floor of the Cathedral at Helm’s Hold.

You don’t remember what it’s like to have dry clothing. It’s been raining so hard and so consistently, this terrible storm over Neverwinter, that all you can do is squint your eyes and shiver in your soaked socks. The screams and cries of townsfolk ring out amidst the blasts of the guards’ horns, the cracks of lightning, and the rumbles of thunder. Chaos erupts around the city of Neverwinter. The mad and marked are lashing out! The general population devolves into looters, thieves, and thugs. Who can help our party of adventurers make headway in this chaos?

D&D Encounters : Storm Over Neverwinter, Session 3 RECAP

by Giaco Furino

The sky is dark and filled with the rumbling of thunder. In the distance a crack of lightning brightens the horizon. The storm over the tumultuous city of Neverwinter looms ever closer. In the midst of this historic storm, the likes of which have never been seen by the port town, cultists of Asmodeus kidnap and seem to brainwash parts of the population. Times are tough in the toughest city this side of the Silver Marches.

D&D Encounters : Storm Over Neverwinter, Session 2 RECAP

by Giaco Furino

The whipping winds of the looming storm battered back and forth the broken doors of Lady Nidris’ home. The heroes, tasked with taking her safely back to her abode after an attempted kidnapping, began this session searching her ruined apartment for clues as to where her son was taken. The culprits seemed clear: giant markings of Asmodeus were branded and painted in blood all over her home. This was clearly the work of the Asmodeus cultists the heroes tangled with in Session One.

Every Wednesday at Twenty Sided Store we play D&D Encounters. We have an average of 30 players and a team of 6 DMs running tables each season. At the end of every season I hand out a feedback questionnaire to our players. This season one of the questions I asked was, “If you had one question for Team DM what would it be?” and so I present you with this video as an attempt to answer those questions.

D&D Encounters : Escaping the Arrow - Session Recaps

Session 1

Entry by Leo Jenicek

Except from the Journal of Lord Gil-Thalion

Date… That’s bit of mystery at present, as I do seem to be escaping from a bally odd prison. Ormanel, normally I would be narrating my exciting adventures to you, and you’d be putting a bit of panache on the proceeding, as if my adventurer were not as adventurous as adventures should be! (Hmmm… Perhaps you were right, this writing is dashedly difficult! Well, I’ll give it the old “What Ho!” and press on.)

Sometimes the choices we make are not nearly as black and white as we would be led to believe. I was given this curse in an act of villainy, but if I can use it to sway the battle between darkness and light, even though I cannot enjoy the latter, I will do all my immortal body will allow me.

I am a product of darkness, but I fight not for it.

From the shoulder of my charge, I beheld the great siege of Mithral Hall. Behind the sounds of marching patrols, our traveling band could hear a solitary horn beckoning the enemy troops toward action. The
young Locke has come to fully embrace the flux of his lycanthropy curse and used it to great advantage as we attacked the closest commander tent. Having retrieved a map and burning the place down, we destroyed the accursed horn before making our way toward one of the “secret” entrances to the Hall.

*The following is an excerpt taken from the second entry of Andrest Locke’s Journal detailing his exploits during the War of Ever Lasting Darkness. Late Spring, 1484 DR.

…They screamed and spat in our faces as they pushed the three of us to our seats. The challenger sets himself down into the stony, arena pit. I see the signs of savagery all over – blood on the walls; crunched bones and skulls detail the dark-shaded floor. Standing opposite of Rangar in the pit was a scaly angry reptile: a drake. One of his eyes were missing, the other shut closed and scarred. It was blind, yet I had the feeling it could smell out its victim.

While scholars across the realms are still piecing together much of the details of what we now know as the War of Everlasting Darkess, one archaeological find has become a wealth of information. In the ruins of modest Temple of Kelemvor located within the Glimmerwood (exact location unknown) a collection of letters were discovered. The correspondences are all addressed to one Father Arneston, believed to be the high priest of the temple, and also a ranking member of the Order of Doomguides. The letters are penned by a young Paladin in this order, one Valara Solrei, who provides unprecedented insight into the events leading up to the War of Everlasting Darkness…

Greetings Father Arneston,

I write this to you from a well-kept room in the Whistling Stag Inn, in Quaevarr. I am sure you know of it well, it is not more than a few days journey. I followed the rumors of a restless spirit back to this village and while the rumors held true, what I found went far beyond the mere presence of an undying soul. The specter was himself once a knight, a paladin perhaps, of the long dead god of guardians, Helm.
