“We like to give you fantasy... side by side with common sense,” declared the editors of Vogue in the June 1, 1939 issue of the magazine, which was dedicated to Beach Fashions and Beauty. 

Setting the tone for the fashions within was an enigmatic cover by Salvador Dalí, “the fantastic Surrealist,” whose symbols the magazine decoded thus: “Flowers for the beauty of women, a skipping figure for the remembrance of her childhood, a skeleton ship for the sadness of things past.”
