Alex and Sarah look on as Lauren demonstrates mini painting

Spotlight September 2024 | Mini Painting

This month for our September theme Level Up Your Game we all sat down for some true leveling up – mini painting! We had a range of experience on the team– Luis and Morgan had never painted a mini, Sarah had painted one before and Alex had painted a bunch. We all chose a mini ("freaky" was the theme of the night) and Lauren taught us the basic techniques for priming and painting.

Thoughts on Painting with the Team

Sarah and Alex paint minis
"We had a lot of fun naming and coming up with stories for our miniatures. For example - Luis and I had minis that are cousins. His does the killing and mine does the eating" (◍•ᴗ•◍) -Sarah
"I loved seeing how primer actually works. There are so many layers to mini painting that I wasn't really aware of– I learned A LOT!" -Morgan
"Dry brushing is magic. It pulls out all the details in a mini." -Alex

Favorite Moments!

Alex holds a miniature and paints
"My favorite moment was watching how everyone fell in love with each other's minis. Miniature Painting is such a great community activity." -Alex
"Just hanging out was super fun. I love when the team gets time to bond and what better way to do it than painting together!" -Sarah
"I had heard 'dry brush' and 'wash' before but seeing the different results from both the different amounts of paint and water – and how everyone used them differently – was really cool to see in real time."  -Morgan

Recommendations

Alex, Morgan and Sarah admire their minis
"I would recommend everyone who is a little curious to try it out. I think I was initially intimidated- I don't have a lot of artistic ability. But once I let go and just started experimenting with the colors and seeing how the different brush techniques changed the color, I really started having a lot of fun." -Morgan
"Miniature Painting is a skill everyone should try. I love getting my RPG party together to do a mini painting session before we play." -Alex
"YES. Even if you’ve never picked up a paintbrush in your life, mini painting will awaken something in you that is so fun to explore." -Sarah

Perfect for Leveling Up

Painted minis by a terrain scene
"Miniature Painting is perfect for leveling up. It challenges you to make choices and commit to them - watching how layers build on top of each other for an amazing product is the personification of leveling up." -Alex
"Minis are the perfect way to level up ANY game. And the techniques you learn can be applied to board games that come with their own minis– you can paint those!!" -Sarah
"As someone with truly an untold amount of unpainted minis, I think mini painting is a real level up moment for your game." -Morgan
