Using the rules of the highly-acclaimed Blades in the Dark, Girl by Moonlight creates a unique play experience that represents the breadth of the magical girl genre. It offers four Series Playsets to cover a variety of stories, including:
- At The Brink of The Abyss focuses on heroic magical girls who fight to reclaim a corrupted world– inspired by Sailor Moon and Steven Universe.
- Beneath A Rotting Sky deals with tragedy and betrayal where magical girls are doomed to an inevitable fate– inspired by Puella Magi Madoka Magica.
- On A Sea of Stars features mecha pilots struggling against extinction at the hands of the Leviathans– inspired by Diebuster and The Vision of Escaflowne.
- In A Maze of Dreams draws on both Serial Experiments Lain and Paprika. Its central themes are desire, mass culture and ideas developing a life of their own.
